This past week was the inaugural Jimmy V week on ESPN. For those who don’t know him Jimmy V is Jim Valvano. He played NCAA basketball at Rutgers University and went on to coach at Johns Hopkins, Bucknell, Iona, and N.C. State where he won the ACC Tournament and the NCAA National Championship in 1983. The later became a basketball analyst with ABC/ESPN. In June of 1992 he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. At the 1993 ESPYs he was awarded the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. During his emotional acceptance speech he announced with the assistance of ESPN the formation of The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Later that year Jimmy V lost his battle with cancer.
Jimmy V’s speech at the 1993 ESPYs is one of the most inspirational video’s I’ve ever watched. I’ve seen it a number of times and every time I watch it it really hits home. This website is about personal finance and investing, and finding motivation to do something that might not be apart of your everyday routine. Its about new and exciting opportunities. If this video doesn’t move you do to something, anything, that you care about with passion and heart then I suggest you check your pulse. I recommend that everyone watch this video and think about it in perspective with your own lives. I think that Jimmy’s message to live everyday of your life to the fullest is something that we all can appreciate. If you’ve already seen the video watch it again, if you haven’t then take some time to watch it for the first time. I promise that it will be time well spent.
